We are proud to share that Beaumont Hospital in Dublin is now equipped with the MOZART® 3D Specimen Imaging System.

In the fast-paced environment of a gross room, accuracy and efficiency are paramount. Every tissue sample processed plays a crucial role in patient care, so proper and timely specimen evaluation from the outset can significantly impact diagnostic accuracy and treatment decisions. This is where specimen radiography steps in, providing real-time imaging to support Pathologists' Assistants (PAs), Pathology Residents, and Pathologists in their daily workflow.

The intra-operative use of the 3D specimen tomosynthesis function could potentially save 20-50% of patients from a second operation. This would lead to a significant improvement in patient outcomes and a reduction in the cost of healthcare provision.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is an increasingly valuable procedure in cancer care, particularly for melanoma and breast cancer. By isolating and testing sentinel lymph nodes—the first nodes that harbor cancer cells once they exit from a primary tumor—SLNB allows doctors to determine whether the cancer has spread while avoiding extensive invasive surgery. 

Use of the 3D specimen tomosynthesis slices intra-operatively could reduce re-excision rates compared to 2D composite view by 20% when images are reviewed by the surgeon alone intraoperatively. If a breast radiologist were to report the 3D images intra-operatively, 50% of patients could have avoided re-excision. This would lead to a significant improvement in patient outcomes and a reduction in healthcare provision costs.
